Step
1: Decide on a domain name(s)
|
|
|
| |
Your first step in small business
web hosting is deciding what you're going to call the website (otherwise
known as the domain name). With my websites I have my company name
(www.leadingonedge.com)
as the domain name. I also have different names for my website which
correspond to keywords (phrases that you would type into a
search engine such as Google) that are applicable to my content.
As example, in addition to my company name, I also have the following
domain names:..
Why do this? Simple. Search engines
like Google try to figure out what your website is about based on the
text in your website and in what you call the website. This is
called search engine optimization (or SEO).
You not only want to use a keyword in the text of your page, you also
want to consider using the keyword in the domain name. Search engines like
this and can reward you with a higher ranking which means your small
business web hosting site
shows up higher in search engine results. You can use a tool like
Overture's keyword selector tool to help you figure out good keywords.
Overture tells you how many people searched on a term in the last month.
I like to find terms that are between 2,000-10,000 searches. If
it's too low you'll be trying to hit too few people. If it's too
high you'll be competing with too many other websites.
You also may notice that
some of my domain names don't end in a .com. I really like a .com
extension when I give my website or email address out to others because
that is pretty much what everyone assumes. For my keyword domain
names, the extension doesn't really matter because it is only being used
for someone to click on in a search engine; it's generally not something
someone is going to type into a search engine.
Take
Action -
-
Research keywords using Overture's keyword selector
tool
-
See if domain names are available. If available, get it
since it may not be available tomorrow. Domains are only around
$9/year so don't sweat it if you pick a domain that you don't use
later on.
