10 Things Every Website Should Have - Part 1
|
|
|
| |
There are millions of web sites out there and just
about anyone can build one. What is key is building a website that is
search engine and user friendly and that gives your visitors a reason to
stay or want to come back. I thought that I would put together a brief
Top 10 list of things that I feel web sites should have that I hope you
will find helpful.
Weather you're building your own web site or having someone else do it
for you, these are basic, key items that you should know. In this
newsletter, we'll focus on the first five.
1) Have an appropriate URL and page titles
Your URL or web address should mirror what your web site is all about.
It should also be the first step you take when building your site. Your
page titles are also very important. If you don't title your individual
pages, it will say something like "Untitled Document" in the blue bar
across the top of your page. It's important to use whatever key words
you have chosen in your page title and URL to generate traffic for your
site.
2) Have an About Us page
When a customer comes to your site, they'll want to know what your
about, what separates you from others in your field and the value that
they will get from being there. It's also a good idea to put information
that shows credibility and longevity (25 years of uncompromising
service, member of the area Chamber of Commerce for 15 years...)Don't
make it a long read, rather use bullet points that are brief and
accurate.
3) ALWAYS have a Contact Us page
I don't know about you, but if I go to a website and it takes me more
than 15 seconds to figure out how to contact someone if I need to, I
move on to someone else! Any and all visitors should have a clearly
marked link to contact you. This should include email and snail mail
addresses, phone numbers and fax numbers. The more information you
provide the greater the comfort level of the potential shopper/client to
use your services.
4) Check your spelling and formatting, proof
read your sentences
What makes this easy for most folks is that the programs that are used
today either correct or let you know if a sentence is grammatically
incorrect. But don't depend on that 100% You'll want your site to have
easy to read content that holds someone's interest. Using the same font
throughout your site and not having too much open space will be much
more eye appealing to your visitors. Spelling errors, runon sentences or
slang that may confuse the reader will only be a distraction.
5) The use of images, color and page design
One of the expressions that we use at Consetta Web Solutions is that
"Slick and Sexy" doesn't get you found on the internet. Having bright
blinding colors, things flashing and pop-up's flying across the screen
are more of an annoyance and a distraction. Make sure that your images
and colors reflect the overall feel of your site and accent each other.
Make sure that when your pages open that everything loads quickly. You
don't want to loose a potential customer if they have to sit there
forever waiting to view your products! As far as design goes, simple is
what's most user friendly. Create easy navigation and links to your
pages. Site maps are a good idea, also.
