How
good is your website? Are you happy with the results you are getting
from it? Or do you have one just because someone told you that you
should have one? These are a few of the questions that you should be
asking yourself if you’re looking to maximize your website marketing
strategy.
In this day and age, all small
businesses need to have some type of presence on the internet. Yes all of you
dinosaurs out there that that don’t think that people will find you on
that “fan dangled thing” are wrong. Weather you have a small town
business or a major ecommerce business you need to have a nitch or something
that will set you apart from your competitors. Something that will make
a potential customer want to use your services or purchase your products
over the other guy.
Your website is a direct reflection
of you! By its design and content, it lets your potential customer know
more about you than you think! It is your virtual store front that is
open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and everything on it should
always be in working order and appropriately designed for the type of
business that you are. Sometimes it’s hard to critique your own website
and be objective so I’ve listed a few questions that you should ask
yourself when viewing your web pages and content. If you don’t yet have
a website and want to get started, you can use these questions as a
guide to get the basics in order.
1) Why do you have or want a website?
You may think that this is silly but
you have no idea how many people have websites just because everyone
else does. These business owners aren’t using their website to their
fullest capacity to market their business. What a shame! As a business
owner your website should have a very distinct purpose otherwise it’s
useless. Is your website a tool to:
*Sell products
*Market your business
*Teach or instruct
*Demonstrate your products or
services
*Provide customer service support
*Viral market
Your website needs a purpose and can
be a very powerful tool to promote your business. Use it wisely and be
creative!
2) Does your website have a theme
that is relevant to your business?
Your website should provide a
defining "Look" that enhances your business personality. Flying
objects and distracting pop ups will only annoy a website visitor but
that doesn’t mean that your site has to be a drag either! Use font
styles that are easy to read and colors that are not overwhelming. If
you’re an accountant you don’t want to use pink and lime green just
because you like those colors together, You need to carry a theme with
colors that show that you are a professional.
3) Can a visitor easily contact you?
We’ve talked about this many times.
It is so very important that a client or customer has a way to contact
you for any type of inquiry. It’s very important that they know that
there’s a living breathing person backing their products or services.
No contact information, you can
pretty much count on no customer!
4) Do you really do what you say on
your website or is your content just a bunch of sales hype?
Again, if you’re a small business you
need to market yourself by communicating who you are, what you do, and
why you do it better than the other guy. Having content that is honest
and enhances your business personality is what will keep people
interested and coming back.
If you check out
www.global-leadership-network.com you
will see a good example of communicating the “who you are and what you
do ”Does your website display and explain what you do, what products you
sell, and what services you provide? Are there examples of your work?
Are there testimonials from your customers? Have you provided contact
information? These are all very important questions that you need to
think over when looking through your site.
5) And last but not least, is your
website serviceable and focused?
Your website is a communication tool
and again a direct reflection of you and your business. If your website
doesn't work properly or is difficult to navigate, the only thing you're
communicating is incompetence and the buck will stop there!
Focus is more difficult than you
think!
When a customer comes to your site
they want direction, answers and simplicity. If they don’t get direction
within the first 20 seconds, chances are you’ll loose them. If you sell
tires, that is what your website should focus on because that is why
people are coming there. Don’t bury links so deep that people have to
click thru to many pages. I hate that, don’t you?
Putting your website together can be
a very cool and satisfying process. Have fun with it! Get opinions from
colleges and friends and ask them to be honest. Remember, you only get
one chance at a first impression. Make it the best one possible!
Next month we’ll be talking about how article writing
and syndicating these articles will:
Increase one-way links to your site
Help you brand your name or site
Help sell your products or services
Bring in plenty of targeted traffic
Give you and your site more creditability
